The nonprofit sector is undergoing a period of significant change, legislative oversight and scrutiny. The California Nonprofit Integrity Act has changed the way nonprofit organizations operate today, and pending federal legislation and guidance under the proposed Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) will almost certainly change the way nonprofit organizations operate tomorrow.
In addition to traditional audit and tax related services, our firm has an extensive background in providing nonprofit organizations service that goes beyond the basics of accounting prescribed in the standards. Dependent upon our required level of independence, we provide services specific to nonprofit organizations including:
- Consulting on the makeup, duties and responsibilities of board members and audit committees
- Providing guidance on standardized donor instruments to eliminate ambiguity regarding restrictions for annual
campaigns, capital campaigns, or through general giving
- Working with attorneys and accountants of specific donors, as well as the donors themselves, to insure that the
intent of their contributions is properly documented to avoid misunderstandings regarding the use of those donations
- Training development departments on the background and theory of accounting for contributions to minimize
errors in financial reporting
- Help identify the relevant metrics to properly allocate costs among various functions
- Provide budget vs actual and period vs period narrative analysis for board members and financial statement users
- Determine with management the proper budgeting technique for the organization, including traditional and rolling
budgets
- Implement procedures to accurately account for grant specific operations that may not be met by the accounting
requirements of the nonprofit accounting standards
